I love working with a range of clients – be that from designing an exclusive collection of patterns for your company, or require an illustrator for your project, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I approached April as I needed a chic pattern designed for my packaging. I wanted something hand drawn & I knew April could do this for me. What I was pleased with was the extra things she provided such as moodboards, mockups & print ready files - certainly more than just providing an illustration! She was a pleasure to work with and kept me informed throughout the process! Thank you!
— Lydia, Keepsake Jewellery.
April is a talented surface pattern designer and illustrator, and it was great to work with her. She was available at short notice to complete the illustration work for us, and understood the brief and style of work we required straight away. Not only did she hand draw the illustrations, but she was able to create website ready layouts and artwork. She was a pleasure to work with and I am hoping we can commission her again for future projects.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with April when she was a resident artist at the Sorting Office Studios during the period of EU funding as part of the Recreate project. April’s illustrations and surface design work is stunning, consistently of an excellent quality and she is a true professional. Whilst based at The Sorting Office, April led several very well received workshops and I would have no hesitation in recommending her as a practitioner, as a workshop leader or to undertake a commission.

April Mawhinney Surface Pattern Textile Design

I love working in pencil, dip pen, Indian ink and watercolours. My surface design style is illustrative, detailed, precise and nature inspired. I love historical botanical illustrations – I’m inspired by British & Irish flora and fauna.

With a keen sense of colour and pattern; I always start by drawing and pattern planning directly onto paper. From there, each collection is created from a series of delicately illustrated motifs, sketched and hand painted by me onto heavy watercolour paper.

I use Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques to enhance my artwork and to create the collections of designs.

I am fully skilled in using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop; I regularly run workshops to teach others these programmes.

If you have a great design but do not have the in-house capabilities to turn the design into a repeating pattern or create bespoke colourways; I can help.

I have extensive experience of creating repeating patterns in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop suitable for both wet/screen and digitial printing processes.

I am also available to create bespoke colourways for clients and love the challenge of working with other designers/brands to see their design blossom.

I understand that knowing the client and customer base are key to a collection’s success. I regularly attend trade shows within the UK and abroad, and I am a member of trend forecasting websites. I combine this knowledge with an eye for pattern and, in-depth customer and trend research.

I have experience designing textiles and wallpaper for the home decor market.

My surface patterns are also suited for licensing for stationery and apparel industries. I’m always excited by new commissions, collaborations or finding new ways my patterns can be used.
