Transforming a room with wallpaper is incredibly rewarding, and it is much easier when you know the right steps. This quick post walks you through preparing your walls, hanging paste‑the‑wall wallpaper with confidence, and keeping it looking beautiful for years to come. Perfect for both first‑timers and seasoned DIY fans.
What Should You Know Before You Start Hanging Your Wallpaper?
Before you get stuck in, take a moment to unwrap your wallpaper and check that everything has arrived safely. These wallpapers are designed for residential spaces and light commercial interiors, and they are happiest on dry, well‑ventilated indoor walls.

This is a paste‑the‑wall product, which means the adhesive goes on the wall rather than the back of the wallpaper. A good quality, solvent‑free, fungicide‑protected ready‑mixed adhesive will give you the best results. Good lighting is also essential, as it helps you spot any issues while you work.
Try to keep the room at a minimum of 12°C (55°F) and make sure there is plenty of ventilation. And if you feel unsure about tackling the job yourself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with calling in a professional decorator.
How Do You Prepare Your Walls Before Hanging Wallpaper?
Preparing your walls properly makes a huge difference to the final finish. Start by brushing the wall with a stiff bristle brush to remove dust and loose material. Then wash the surface with sugar soap or a mild detergent to remove grease or marks. Allow the wall to dry completely before moving on.
If you notice any mould, treat it with a fungicidal wash and let it dry thoroughly. Fill any cracks, holes or imperfections with a good quality filler, smooth them out and be patient while everything dries. A dry surface is always the right surface.
Bare plaster needs to be sealed with an appropriate wall sealant before installation. For a truly polished result, consider cross‑lining your walls with good quality lining paper. Once it is up, allow it to dry fully before hanging your wallpaper.

How Do You Paste and Hang Paste‑the‑Wall Wallpaper?
When you are ready to hang your wallpaper, apply the adhesive directly to the wall. If you have any allergies or sensitivities, check the adhesive ingredients and wear protective gloves.
Trim your wallpaper using sharp decorator’s scissors in a clear, well‑lit space. Cut away from your body and take your time.
Apply paste evenly to the wall, covering an area slightly wider than one wallpaper drop. Hang each length with butt joints, then smooth it down gently with a decorator’s brush, working from the centre outwards to remove air bubbles.
Try to avoid getting paste on the wallpaper surface, as it can cause damage. Keep your hands clean and dry, and do not let paste get onto your brush or roller. If any paste does touch the wallpaper, gently sponge it off while it is still damp using a clean, soft sponge.
How Do You Look After Your Wallpaper Once It Is Installed?
Caring for your wallpaper is simple. If it becomes dirty, wipe it gently with a soft sponge and mild soapy water, using as little moisture as possible. Avoid scrubbing. The inks will not run, but the surface can be damaged by heavy rubbing.
Keep the room well‑ventilated, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Avoid direct water contact and use splashbacks where needed. The wallpaper meets EU, UK and USA fire safety standards, and although it has a very low risk of fading, it is still best to avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
