Peel and stick vs traditional wallpaper: a quick answer

Traditional wallpaper is better for walls if you want longevity, a more refined finish, and an eco-friendly option. Peel and stick wallpaper works best for temporary projects or stable surfaces where you want to avoid using paste.

a dark wood upright piano with the word 'Clarendon' on the front sits in fron of a wall wallpapered in April Mawhinney's dark blue version of the Deadly Nightshade wallpaper called Midnight. It show muted green and blue foliage, purple berries and magenta flowers with bees, and red and purple cinnabar moths.

What is peel and stick wallpaper?

Peel and stick wallpaper is a self-adhesive wall covering. It does not require wallpaper paste and is applied by removing a backing paper and sticking it directly onto the surface.

It is often chosen for:

  • Short-term decorating
  • Rental properties
  • Furniture or DIY projects
  • Quick updates without mess

Because it contains plastic and adhesive layers, it behaves very differently from traditional wallpaper over time.

What is traditional wallpaper?

Traditional wallpaper is applied using wallpaper paste and is typically made from paper or non-woven materials. Modern non-woven wallpapers are designed to be easier to hang and remove than older paper wallpapers.

April Mawhinney wallpapers, for example, are printed onto FSC-approved non-woven paper using eco-friendly inks. This means no plastic is used, and the wallpaper will biodegrade once removed.

Which option is more eco-friendly?

Traditional wallpaper is the more sustainable choice.

Non-woven paper wallpapers:

  • Contain no plastic
  • Use water-based, eco-friendly inks
  • Biodegrade after removal
  • Are often FSC certified (verified by the Forest Stewardship Council to meet high environmental and social standards).

Vinyl and peel and stick wallpapers are printed onto vinyl and use more harsh inks. Once removed, they do not biodegrade because they are a form of plastic.

If sustainability and longevity matter to you, traditional wallpaper is the better option.

Is peel and stick wallpaper safe for walls?

Peel and stick wallpaper can be used on walls, but caution is needed.

It works best on:

  • Very smooth, solid walls
  • Recently painted surfaces that are fully cured
  • Stable surfaces with no loose plaster.

When peel and stick wallpaper is removed, the adhesive can pull away the surface of the wall if the plaster or paint underneath is not sound. This can cause damage, especially in older properties. It also can peel away at the corners and you may see the edges curl over time.

For this reason, peel and stick wallpaper is often better suited to:

  • Furniture
  • Shelving
  • Panels
  • Small DIY projects.

Is traditional wallpaper better for walls?

Yes. For walls, traditional wallpaper is usually the best choice.

Although it requires wallpaper paste and removal may involve a steamer, modern wallpapers are designed to come off far more easily than in the past. Many non-woven wallpapers can be removed in full drops with minimal damage when the walls have been prepared properly.

Traditional wallpaper also:

  • Lasts longer
  • Creates a more seamless finish
  • Ages better over time
  • Is trusted by interior designers.

Peel and stick vs traditional wallpaper: which should you choose?

Choose peel and stick wallpaper if:

  • You want a temporary solution
  • You are covering furniture or small surfaces
  • You want to avoid using paste
  • Longevity is not a priority.

Choose traditional wallpaper if:

  • You are wallpapering walls
  • You want a long-lasting finish
  • Sustainability matters to you
  • You want a more refined, high-end result.

Final thoughts

Peel and stick wallpaper can be useful in the right setting, but for walls and long-term interiors, traditional wallpaper remains the better option. It is more durable, more sustainable, and designed to perform beautifully over time.

If you are investing in your space, traditional wallpaper is usually worth it.
